If the harrowed (and anyone else) can hear the manitou
squirming around inside his torso (where the
fluttering heartbeat comes
from), how can the head live if it's been cut from the
torso and 
therefore
the manitou?

     The way I see it is that the head is where the
brain is.  The brain is where all the information that
person ever learned would be.  The Manitou is not
inside the torso, it is in the head where life even
after death could exist.  Since the manitou is giving
arcane energy to leave the corpse "alive," the energy
is kinda like the electric pulses that the brain once
generated.  
     Honestly, when it comes down to it, the thing is
a manitou.  The corpse is a puppet, the manitou can do
anything it wishes with that energy to make undead
movement of any kind.  
    It's that wicked black magic baby.
