He's been watching. In fact, he had to speed up his plans a bit to hit during the fight (it's discussed briefly in the book, but I'm away from the office and don't have a copy with me).

He's been on Banshee for a long time, then travelled the Hunting Grounds to get back and spent a little time finding his long-lost wife. Then he spent the last few months on earth putting the finishing touches on his special box--which he developed on Banshee with the special properties of the planet there.
