Orbital mechanics and atmospheric effects.... in a nutshell, the air
resistance of the planet slows the Unity to a point that its engines
cant pull it out of its declining orbit in time. to avoid hitting the
planet.

I dont htink other planets in the solar system are inhabited, but
Hellstromme was on Banshee for most of the time he was away from
earth.
