I also really like the current junker rules. I'm a gearhead, and I love complex,
detailed construction systems. I know that a lot of people don't, though, and
I've read more than one review of HOE where the reviewer wanted to play a junker
but gave it up after being unable to make it through all of the math. If simpler
rules help some players enjoy an aspect of the game that they couldn't before,
more power to 'em. It should just be a matter of discussing which rule set your
character will use with the Marshall before starting the game. People like you
and I can go on designing devices we'll never use in character just for fun, and
less technically minded folks can whip something up in the middle of a session
and get back to the game.
Regarding the "standard" junker rules, by the way, they are a huge drag if
you're trying to design your gadgets during the game session. If you're going to
use them, I recommend you design devices on your own time and present the
finished designs to your Marshall when you get to the game.
