Like with most professional skills, I think its primarily use is for
knowledge. While being able to correctly explain the military policy on
fruitcake construction isn't too useful after the apocalypse, but knowing
where military types are liable to stockpile ammunition and supplies could
come in handy.
I think I might also let it substitute for a variety of other basic skills
at a -2 to -4 ish. It seems that an experienced soldier would have some
basic knowledge about weapon maintenance, vehicle maintenance, survival,
navigation, and tactics. I believe the Waste Warriors book may have some
suggestions in this arena as well. Basically, the profession: military
aptitude could be used to cover much of what an average soldier would be
expected to do. Of course, the successful use of profession: military
should yield much more modest results than the use of a more specific and
appropriate skill. For example, if my posse found an intact hover tank I
would probably allow a profession: military check for them to turn it on,
drive it around and little bit, and fire the cannon with blowing themselves
up. However, if they actually expected to do anything remotely useful in a
real combat situation they'd need artillery and drivin': tank skills.
