Thanks for the suggestions.  I really *should* learn how to use a debugger
program.  I have decided to leave the variable in since it's use is
so intertwined with the rest of the program.  If anyone wants the to look
at the source code, I believe you may fetch it from Richard's server,
he has the game running on his server already  (Thanks Richard!  :-)
