I can't think of a good ASCII representation for Quarto. It would be way
difficult to represent the four features of the pieces (height, color,
shape, and "hollowness") properly -- that is, without being too ugly or
abstract. Besides, this game has never actually managed to catch my
attention. But hey, that's just me! ;)

I haven't played this one much, but it sure looks interesting. As for the
representation, it could be made rather easily by separating the four layers
of marbles, like this:

   +---+---+---+---+
   | | | | | +---+---+---+
   +---x---x---x---+ | | | | +---+---+

Now this is the one. :) I agree with you that quoridor is without a doubt
the best of the lot -- or, at least the best of the ones I've tried. I've
played some games throught email and was actually thinking of implementing
it for the server. Unfortunately this was not planned in the short run, as I
am not that fluent in C++ yet. So, please, go ahead!

You might find helpful to have a look at the ASCII representation that I've
been using in my email games lately (of course, my opponent and I had to
edit the board manually each time, but this was not all that amount of
work).

Well, I guess that should be pretty much self-explainable. Just note that
'O' stands for Oeste (West in Spanish, shouldn't be much of a hassle to
change that ;) and 'vallas' means, as you've already guessed, fences. I
think I've made the notation as short and clear as possible.

I recall that the Italian inventor of Quoridor, or more precisely, of an
earlier version of the game named Pinko Pallino, gave his authorization
about a year ago or so in the pbmserver-users list, when I wrote back then
about the game, looking for an implementor. Oh well, it just took a year to
find him. ;)

Good to have enthusiastic energetic people like you around. :)
