apparently i am the only person to think this, but i mostly like option A 
better.  i do find the dots above D8 to be distracting, since they are 
unecessary, but i like the idea of having the dots above D6 and G7 remain, 
it helps me visualize the grid better, which seems to distort somewhat when 
the dots are removed, since you're using _ instead of - now for the well 
boundaries.  (of course it does this on the bottom of the pieces regardless, 
so it's hard to say.)
