I wouldn't rule out the introduction of a komi.  One
way to make it fair is to have the two players bid
(simultaneously issue their proposed komi).  The
person submitting the higher number gets to play black
(i.e., gives that number of points to the opponent). 
If the two bids are equal, starting player is
determined at random.

I don't remember in what game I first saw this
proposed, but it is provably fair.
