Re: [pbmserv] Quoridor tournament coming up

Barticus suggested playing with a limit of 9 walls per player instead of

preference. Let me know if you have a preference either way.
I would like a player who supports the ten fence rule to offer a reason why
he supports it. It's not that Quoridor has a long tradition. The rules of
Chess went through many centuries of evolution. Games we would recognize
as Chess date back 1500 years, Yet the Queen was the less powerful
Counselor until the 15th century, en passant was not widely used until the
18th century. In the late 19th century, some people were campaigning to
save the rule that a pawn may only be promoted to a major piece which had
been removed from the board. It was 1904 (just a century ago) when
international standardization won out, and extra queens were universally
allowed. (And in India some people play without the two square first move
for the pawn, and thus without en passant.)
Quoridor is still in its infancy. Other than a history, why do people
favor 10 fences over 9?
