Okay, evvybuddy, I am taking challenges at Stymie. The first move is a
single space and the subsequent moves are double, so this game should be
close to balanced, so you can challenge me to just one game, but make it a
pair if you like.
BTW, historically the only connection game I really like is
TwixT. Recently, ConHex came along, and it is the first game since TwixT
which is not just a minor variation of Hex. Cameron told me he was writing
a book on connection games. In my boundless egotism, I wanted to invent a
game for his book, but not just another variation of Hex. I tossed some
rule ideas around in my head, and eventually invented Stymie.
The word "stymie" is Scots for obstruction. It comes into common English
usage via the game of golf, though the stymie was abolished from golf half
a century ago. As you play the game of Stymie, you eventually get some cut
off spaces where you need to make a single move. But if you make that
single move, your opponent gets a triple move, which may allow him to make
an end run around you. So you are stymied, blocked from moving where you
want to, until you have filled in all the spots where your opponent can
make an end run.
BTW, the most experienced Stymie player is Cameron, not me. In fact I have
not yet played a single game against anyone but myself. So this is a new
game for all of us. Start now and soon you may be the world's most
experienced Stymie player.
