Re: [pbmserv] For linux- ***and windows-*** using xiangqi players!

Hello Jian,

I am sorry that the program is currently unusable for you. As I said, it was written more as an exercise for myself in learning Ruby.

I have played a little bit with `rubyscript2exe`, which is intended to roll up the necessary libraries into a single program. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it work for this program so far.

I am currently quite busy, however if I find some spare time then I will make another attempt to put this program together in a convenient way for Windows users. Until then, I'm afraid it's downloading Ruby or using the ASCII board!

Hello joss and other players of xiangqi,

I remain convinced that one would need that a utility which allows to convert the ascii diagram or the list of the moves of the games of xiangqi played on the PBM server for the computers which turns under Windows.
But this without being obliged to use a program such as Ruby who seems to me very heavy compared with a very simple utility.
I thus hope that a player who would know how to program this utility made it.
It would relaunch the game of xiangqi on the PBM server. This game is practically more played on this site for the moment and it is indeed pity.

Greetings

Jian

All,

Sorry to keep spamming about this topic. This will be the last message, I hope.

I just noticed that there was a bug in boardparse where a piece taking another piece wouldn't overwrite the old piece. I have now fixed this, and updated the downloads on the webpage. If you downloaded and tried this code, then you _really_ want the new version:

Thanks a lot,

Joss

Hi all,

I have now had a chance to test the Xiangqi board parsing program under Windows XP. I am happy to say that it seems to work perfectly with the latest version of Ruby. I cannot test this, but I see no reason why it won't work on other version of Windows that are supported by Ruby.

You do have to install Ruby first, however. This is not difficult, but requires you to download about 20Mb of files. My apologies to people with slow connections.

I have updated the page at: http://www.pseudonymity.net/~joss/games/xiangqi/board_parse.html to include instructions for installing this program under Windows. Thank you to the people that pointed out it would run in that environment after all.

If anyone has any (relevant) problems then I will be happy to try and help you sort them out.

Yours,

Joss

Hello joss,

I am a player of xiangqi and it has been a long time since I wait for an interface graphic as for the one that you propose to be able to play on the PBM server.
It is damage that you propose it only for the users of Linux. For my part, I use Windows XP and I think that most of the players use Windows.
The game of xiangqi is not practically more played on the PBM server probably because we have only diagrams ascii for the moment.
Would not it be possible that you study the possibility to propose us a graphic interface turning under Windows?
You can see examples for other games to : http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/dologin.php

Greetings

jian (on PBM server)
