Janice I believe that Adrienne is speaking of her dogs working in a field or
pasture.  I don' think in this case most dogs would let a strange dog roam or
otherwise come into the pasture where it was guarding without challenging it.
Now if the dog was brought into and introduced into the pasture the situation
could be different as you describe i.e. the dog could discriminate the
differences and allow the intruder as it were.
