Re: [PyrNet-L] Pyr in Kill Shelter

Guess spring is here. I work in a shelter and was called by another shelter
because the had a "great white pyrenees" in their facility. They knew I owned
one and asked if I would be interested in taking her. I drove out there and
was surprised to see an extremely cage aggressive Kuvasz. It took me 20
minutes to coax her near the door and she then bolted--walking around the
shelter. I wouldn't let the shelter personnel get near her, and finally
slipped a collar on her. I took her outside and just saw something in her
eyes that said she was really sorry and that I could trust her if I took it
slow. I was given the choice of taking her on the spot or she would be
euthanized. Needless to say ($85 dollars later) I took her home and called
Kuvasz rescue. I have never seen a kinder, sweeter animal in my life. She
adores me, plays like a puppy, loves cats and wags her tail and hops around
like an idiot when she sees other dogs. She is listed on the Kuvasz mailing
list, but if anybody here knows of an interested party, please let me know.

Folks, please be careful in handling our friends in a shelter situation. It
could literally cost them their lives. Do not move quickly, corner or be
forceful with them. They are in a traumatic situation with barking dogs,
strangers, cages, etc. I assess dogs every day and decide their fate. I
thank God for giving me the talents I need in handling our bigger animals,
and I know that someday I will probably get injured, but to this day have
NEVER been bitten by a shelter dog. (Of course people who work with me think I
am a tad bit looney with some of my methods of gaining the dog's trust), but
who cares what people think? I close my eyes and see that nasty looking,
snarling dog in that cage and say a little thank you prayer that I trusted my
gut.
