I just have to comment on this one part of your message. I don't know that
there is ANY "time limit" on how long a dog will remember past abuse. I
think it depends entirely on the individual dog.
It made me remember a dog we had when I was a child. She was a german
shepherd/collie mix that was "dropped off" out here at the farm -- we found
her hiding under the tractor. She was a wonderful dog and we kept her for
the rest of her lifetime -- but never during her life did she ever trust
ANY man! All of us kids were girls, and mom and grandma lived here, but of
course there was also grandpa here and various male friends or relatives
that would come and go (including boyfriends as we girls got older).
This dog never trusted a male of our species or would let any of them get
near her. I have no idea what happened to her before she was left off
here, but it must have been really bad, and we always assumed it must have
had something to do with the way a man treated her.
I would be interested to here how this rescue dog you are considering
reacts to your husband.
