[PyrNet-L] HEALTH: Red gums (non-Pyr)

A friend has a 6 year-old neutered male collie who suddenly came down with
red gums. The vet cleaned his teeth thoroughly which had no effect. A
thyroid panel was normal and a blood chem panel revealed only a slightly
elevated ALT.

The dog was seen by Clondike's holistic vet who has tried 2 different
Chinese herbal treatments, one for the spleen and one for overall immune
system enhancement. So far there is no change.

There is no odor and both vets feel the problem is systemic rather than
dental. Because of collies' susceptability to autoimmune problems, the
owner suspects something of this type. Her next thought is to consult Dr.
Jean Dodds.

Has anybody encountered anything similar and if so, what should be done to
get an accurate diagnosis? While the dog is only experiencing minor
irritation at present, the owner is afraid to wait passively for more
symptoms to develop.

The owner is Melanie Kerber <kerber@kutztown.edu> and you can contact her
directly or through me. Any help would be most appreciated. This is
Clondike's therapy buddy!

Thanks,

David
