Ruth, sounds like you have taking your role as a breeder with the goodness
of the breed in mind. 22 litters in 33 years is a sign of carefully
planned breeding. I hope you never have a problem with soundness. Some
of the other problems you say you have had recently can also be attributed
to environment & food as well. As the years & industry progress it seems
so do health problems in all species. You are to be commended for your
breeding approach (imho). I hope to breed soon and am doing my homework,
and I can tell you it isn't easy. I have done all the tests on my dogs
with normal & good results, but am finding out more & more breeders do not
do testing. Most do hips & elbows - but where are the thyroids (Barb does
this too) - other blood chemistries, eyes, and other xrays?
I know that there are health problems that can be "fixed" but have no
respect for people who breed by this theory. A health problem is a
PROBLEM. Whatever happened to breeding for the "good of the breed". I
have seen a lot of people start off saying that "they would never" and only
to find out they sacrifice this for what's winning. I have heard all the
excuses - well that can be fixed is the biggest yet - I think that is bad
breeding. Size is important but health soundness in temperment & structure
should be on the top of the checklist. Does size have to be sacrificed?
I think Ruth has proven it doesn't.
Good things come to those who wait!
