x-rays can usually rule out spinal stenosis. DM is usually diagnosed by process of elimination. A myelogram can be done, but is usually not recommended because of the risks involved in anesthetic as well as the myelogram itself.
One of the diagnostic tests is a simple one...turn the toes of the rear foot over, if the dog does not right the foot immediately, that is a good clue.
Also, genetics plays a big part...if you know the familial history of a dog, and either parent had DM then that is another good clue you are diagnosing correctly.
