This is from my experience too, and as Barb mentioned, Frontline seems pretty
effective. Mother and I both use Frontline on our dogs, and so far I've only
found 1 small tick walking on Tanukis' coat, not dug in. Last year Candy
(Mother's Pyr) was suddenly covered with deer tick! Don't know where she got
into them, as Candy is a "house dog", spending her days on the screened back
porch or the kitchen floor, and going out only to do her business. Mother
started using Frontline and in about a week the ticks were dying. This year
Mother has already started with the Frontline and she hasn't seen a tick on
Candy.
