This is from my experience too, and as Barb mentioned, Frontline seems pretty 
effective.  Mother and I both use Frontline on our dogs, and so far I've only 
found 1 small tick walking on Tanukis' coat, not dug in.  Last year Candy 
(Mother's Pyr) was suddenly covered with deer tick!  Don't know where she got 
into them, as Candy is a "house dog", spending her days on the screened back 
porch or the kitchen floor, and going out only to do her business.  Mother 
started using Frontline and in about a week the ticks were dying.  This year 
Mother has already started with the Frontline and she hasn't seen a tick on 
Candy.
