Dog treats linked to salmonella

Canadian Press

EDMONTON -- Pet owners are being warned to be careful with a popular dog
treat that has been linked to 23 cases of salmonella poisoning in people
across Canada.
Anyone handling pig ears should wash thoroughly with warm water and
soap, Health Canada says. Children, the elderly and people with immune
deficiencies should avoid handling the product altogether.
The government issued the alert yesterday after an investigation
uncovered salmonella poisoning in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova
Scotia and P.E.I.
The cases first surfaced in Alberta, and were linked to pig ears made by
Farm Meats Canada Ltd. of High River, Alta., prompting further
investigation by Health Canada and the public warning.
It's possible for a dog to carry the salmonella bacteria and not show any
symptoms, so it's important for people to wash carefully.
Further investigations are under way to determine how widespread the
infections have become. The problem may not be limited to a single
manufacturer, Health Canada said.>>
