Go to any place that sells horse supplies and find some Cowboy Magic
Shine and Detangler (they also make shampoo, conditioner, etc.).  You can
either mix it 15 parts water to one part Shine and Detangler or you can
place a dime-size amount in your hand and work into the mat.  I promise
you, the mag will C-O-M-B out after just a few minutes.  And your hands
will feel softer than ever.  It almost feels like it has lanolin in it. 
Whatever it is, it is a miracle.
