In the case of OFA, "historically" is 30 years.  Which is a large span of
time I agree but it is not forever and when better things come along they
should be utilized.  And the *only* "information" that is available from
them is that on cleared dogs. I think that it is nearly essential that we
understand the difference between a closed and an open registry and how
those two things can affect the breed in the long run.  There is no truly
serious canine geneticist who does not support the use of open registries.
There will be an interview with Dr. Jerold Bell in the upcoming Bulletin
that addresses this.  BTW, Dr Bell will be presenting a 3 hour long health
and genetics seminar in Andover.  The health committee is very pleased and
very glad that we fit into his busy schedule.
