We plan to install a new  chain link fence as soon as the weather improves.
How high should the fence be?  We were thinking 8 feet.  Any comments or
advice would be appreciated.    Do Pyrs typically dig themselves out of
fenced areas.  Our dog has not exhibited digging tendencies, but he is
creative and we have started calling him houdini dog.

If they really want to go over one, they will.  Why don't you try "hot
wiring" the present fence.  It will condition him to stay away from the
fence.  It is humane and it is cheaper than a new fence.  Make sure to get
hot wire that has enough jolt to get his attention.
