Additionally, if you email Orysia Dawydiak, she will be happy to fill you
in
on her opinion regarding PYRS and their relationship to other LGD Breeds in
so far as Primitiveness, and Guarding Ability are concerned. She certainly
gave me an ear full of how primitive her AKBASH dogs are compared to PYRS.
IMHO, The LGD Breeds that are not AKC affiliated or as in the case of The
Anatolian Shepherds/Kangal Dogs, that are only recently AKC affiliated,
(one
can make a strong argument that) the longer the association with The AKC,
and
the Show Ring, The more CIVILIZED these dogs become!!!!!! >>

Orysia has her own agenda as do we all. Also please remember that Pyrs
have nearly always been more CIVILIZED than Akbash. They lived in a more
crowded, more human occupied world than the Akbash and Kangals of Turkey.
To say nothing of the COs <yikes>. Pyrs have always had the reputation of
being calmer, gentler etc etc. You might be interested in checking out the
comparison done as the USSES in Dubois. You can find it at :
http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/lgd-l/usda588.htm. I grant you that this is
an old study but is not necessarily invalid. Jeff (Green) and Roger
(Woodruff) were impressed by the Pyrs for their calmness, their early
maturity, their independance and common sense. They were much less likely
than the other breeds to rough stock or to bite people. There are some
clear advantages to them over the more "primitive" breeds and those
advantages do not necessarily make them less effective LGDs.
