Yes, you're right, it does kill young, and while mature animals can
recover, there is chance of reinfection.  Nasty stuff all around!

Dogs, humans, vehicles, all are good sources of transmission for this type
of disease.  From the one web site I read that under the correct conditions
(temperate ones) the spore can remain viable for 30 days.
