I'm like you, Joe, I look at the shepherd's crook as an anomaly for the
breed.  However, I have found it useful to catch a dog as it runs by you. 
With our Kes, her tail has such a strong crook, that you can actually stop
her by hooking your finger in the crook.  However, she's the one that is
less than perfect with regards to confirmation, so I don't think this is a
true situation.
