We keep ours in coat, for the same reasons Joe mentioned.
I do want to add however that keeping that remaining top coat very clean
and brushed out and "airy" so to speak seems to make a big difference.  I
think that is where you see the insulating effect. and the skin
protection coming from just those guard hairs.  If it were to get packed
down it might be very uncomfortable.  Fortunately Pyr coats are fairly
easy to keep that way with just a little attention to brushing, as Joe
