Clipping has not hurt our Pyr's coat.  It still comes in long and beautiful.
The skin is fair and that is an issue but we don't clip down that far.  We
clip the fur the length of what's on his head.  Also, he pretty much stays
indoors so it hasn't ever been an issue for us.
