Not to argue John's basic point but I think that we also need to remember
that it was Muslim's (the Bedouin) who developed, refined and sheltered one
the oldest and finest of all sighthounds, the Saluki.  Indeed they are still
kept by the Bedouin in the desert and they still hunt with them.  They have
traditionally been kept in the tents by the women who have even been known
to nurse orphan pups.  The Bedouin call them El Hor, which translates
roughly (very roughly) into God's dog.  I tell this only to remind us that
things are not always or not entirely what they seem.

Not surprising at all.  To Muslims the dog, I think they use the word
curr(sp?), is the lowest form of life.  It is the absolute insult to call a
muslim a "dog".
