Was this caution to protect the OTHER dog??  A newf puppy is a big animal
(just like a pyr!!!)  and it could injure another dog if it doesn't realize
its own size and weight.

I can't imagine not socializing a puppy who will grow to weigh more than I
do  while it is still small.  This sounds like a very unwise thing to do.
We had a Great Dane when I was young, she was not always graceful when
growing and certainly could have been injured rough housing with an equal
sized but heavier dog but getting her socialized to people and animals was
stressed by the breeder while she was younger.
