Hi,
This is my first post. I have enjoyed reading the
comments from the past few weeks.
My Pyr (Snowflake) has been with me for 5 years now.
She adopted us while we were at my son's baseball
game. My wife and two baby daughters and a couple of
other babies were sitting on a blanket watching the
game when this HUGE white furball of a dog walked up
and sat down on the blanket with them. My wife was a
bit nervous but the dog was very well behaved. The
kids just climbed all over this polar bear while she
just drank up the attention.
Well, the game ended, the park cleared out and we were
the last to leave. We expected someone to come get
this beautiful dog, but no one was around. By this
time, my wife had fallen in love with her and
convinced me to take her home while we found the
owner.
Two weeks passed with no answer to the signs we
posted. Then a call came from a lady who described
her to a "T". My wife was downcast until the caller
said "Want to keep her?" My wife only had to twist my
arm a little bit. She was so extatic. Snowflake was
going to be a permanent resident.
Seems that the caller was looking to place her in a
good home. The Pyr had broken out of her original
owner's house/yard too many times to count. The
animal control person knew the dog by sight. This
caller, a friend of the animal control person, had
taken on the challenge of finding her a new home after
the original owner had "given up".
We had no idea what kind of dog Snowflake was. a
Great Pyrenees was. The caller told us that she was a
Great Pyrenees and was 11 months old. I exclaimed
"You mean she's a puppy and she is going to get
bigger!?!?!?!" Well, as time went along, we learned
about getting bigger, shedding, digging, escaping, and
most other common Pyr behaviors. We also learned
about what an incredible and loving animal this dog
is. She has become a wonderful part of our family
(all 131.4 lbs of her!)
Now to the subject of my post. I found out rather
quickly just what an escape artist a Pyr can be.
Snowflake very politely showed me every weakness in my
6 foot privacy fence. All of the fencing around the
yard has been replaced over time. We thought that the
perimeter was well in control.
Three weeks ago, I got home from work, walked out to
the back yard to talk to my animals, but Snowflake
didn't come to me. After calmly searching and then
frantically searching the back yard, I found a hidden
section of fencing that Snowflake had literally
knocked down. She had a head start on me, so I was
very fearful. I searched on foot and by car for over
an hour. I finally found her about a mile away
running along a street, just a few yards from the end
of the neighborhood and beyond that, open prairie. I
drove up beside her, opened the door, and called to
her. She stopped, turned, and bounded into the car.
Hot, tired and thirsty from her adventure, she was
happy to see me and ready to go home.
I cannot tell you the number of terrible scenarios and
awful images that had floated through my mind while I
was searching for her. I thanked God for answering my
prayers and for returning Snowflake to me.
The fence is mended.
