Just a caution before we lump all backyard breeders in together!
In general, I agree with most of what people have said on this subject,
but I think it's important to note that there are differences among people
who might come under the category of "backyard breeder."
We got Paddington from a couple who would probably be classified this way,
because they had only one bitch, bred only one litter, and were not
seriously into showing, although they did put almost enough points on the
bitch for a championship. However, they were members of the GPCA, followed
the Code of Ethics and passed it on to us, sold all the puppies on
spay/neuter contracts, did extensive research before breeding, including
getting advice from many serious breeders regarding the "desirability" of
the bitch for breeding, all necessary health checks, etc. They did similar
research before choosing a sire. Given the care and attention they gave
the five puppies, in addition to all the care, stud fees, etc., I'm sure
they lost money if anything.
