Preventive brushing avoids this completely and take just a few minutes weekly once the coat is mat free.

Actually, BB is blowing coat right now so I have to brush him every night. I think what happened was there were the beginnings of felting in tail and upper hind hips and getting that wet and letting air dry made them worse.
