Could this be one of the clues -- being born and raised in this type of
environment?   I remember a number of years ago my ferrier was trimming my
horses.  My border collie was literally under the horses' feet picking up
the trimmings.  He commented that some "city" friends of his gave their dog
some of the trimmings and it got very sick immediately after eating them. 
Could this be because the "city" dog wasn't use to the bacterial, etc that
my border collie had become accustomed to?  Just like in people.  About 10
years ago, I was in Egypt on holiday, and about a week after being there I
became sick.  The doctor who treated me remarked that the types of bacteria
that was present in Egypt were quite different from what I was use to, and
with time (and some meds and careful eating) I would adjust.
