RE: [pyrnet] Vacuum Cleaner

Nancy,
My opinion is that you should not feel compelled to spend 400 on a vacuum. I could understand if one had a rather large square footage home and a couple of children running around and wall to wall carpet. But most people I have run into spend big money on a vac because they have it. I own a carpet cleaning business and get asked about good vacs all the time.
I own a Pyr and a Sheppard and have owned two previous Newfs. I have conceeded to a lifetime of hair as I love my dogs to be inside in the evenings and overnight. I have hardwood throughout and carpet in a hallway and living room. Fuz gets everywhere as you know. I just bought a $70 Dirt Devil from Best Buy (the Vision Wide Glide- which is soon to be discontinued). Big motors arent the issue. Its where the suction comes from. Obviously you cant compare every vac yourself. Use Consumer Reports Buying guide. They rate everything from effectiveness on carpet, bare floors, to convenience of tools. For me, excellent on carpets and convenient disconnect of the hose to suck like a shop vac is essential to getting all the fuzz in the corners and baseboards (NO vac will get your corners), and uprights are best for me and the dogs. CR rates the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra ($140)--CR best buy, DIrt Devil Scorpion (bagless) ($80) and the DIrt Devil Platnum ($120) as well as the Dyson and all the other expensive models. All uprights. As far as belts. You'll have to deal with it. They all break, even $700 Aerus and Oreck models. So you should learn to do it yourself(once a year average) or buy one from Sears or locate a shop near you that will do it for free or a small fee.

I have a very small house (2 small bedrooms) with lots of tight corners. Two
rooms are carpeted and the rest either have hardwood floors or linoleum. I
have an older Sears canister vaccuum cleaner. The Pyr hair has always raised
huge amounts of havoc with both the beater brush in the floor head and then
vaccum head to the canister. I would dearly love to dump this $400 (new)
unit that was purchased 10 years ago.

I would absolutely LOVE to purchase an upright that can get into the
tightest of spots and suck up Pyr hair on both carpet and linoleum/hardwood
floors. I have to tell you that for the last two years I have been using the
brush on the floor that I have been using to pull out on the Pyrs. Sad, yes!
I need advise on a vacuum that you have used for a number of years, hasn't
driven you crazy with belts, and that you feel comfortable enough to endorse
to another Pyr lover.

My two rescue Pyrs and I would absolutely love to hear any and all
suggestions you may have.
