Both TX and NM went to the 3 year Rabies Vaccine Protocol in 2003.  
To my knowledge there are only a few states left that require the 1 year 
protocol. We had a cat in Nevada that caught a rabid bat.  The cat was 
current on Rabies, but the vet consulted with CSU and it was 
recommended the cat have a rabies booster, as well as be quarantined 
for a period of time.  I believe this is the procedure used in most cases.
