[pyrnet] RE: pyrnet-l-digest.20050516-Thin Pyrs

I have a male pyr which is almost 1 1/2 years old now. He is tall and THIN... But his grandparents are tall and lanky and so is his mother. My other pyrs are SOLID. They all eat the same food and dog treats. But the others come from different lines. But Comet is too thin for my liking, but the vet said he is fine! Thank you for giving the recipe for the "Satin Balls" . I am going to make it and see if that will help him. Thank you Laura S

Satin Balls
The following recipe was sent to _Wellpet_
(http://www.listservice.net/wellpet/) by Diana Carreon, R.N.,C.
It quickly became one of the most requested posts on Wellpet.
Ingredients
10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal [or comparable natural brand]
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.
Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.
Thaw as needed.
Uses
"I take a frozen pack to dogs shows with me, kept on ice, and never have had
any trouble with it spoiling, even in the heat of Texas summers..".

When you mentioned that he had trouble with a raw bone and so on -- I wondered has anyone looked seriously at his teeth? If he had an abcessed tooth it would be very painful to eat. If the abcess were able to drain through his gum he would be in less pain and able to eat a bit more but this might come and go. This might not be easy to see unless a thorough dental exam is conducted. Just a thought...

I know that orthopedically, it is ideal for them to be light and not heavy.
But I, like you, am even embarrassed at this point to bring him anywhere.
I even have been taking him to a different vet's office nearby to monitor his weight (they don't know me there and my vet is 25 miles each way due to this new move I just made).
I also wanted to see if the new vet's office recognized him as a client belonging to someone (I even ran ads in the paper). He was found in this area and I was sure that someone would claim him, but no one has called (except for one person wanting to make sure that it was not a Wheaton Terrier).
I continue to monitor the lost and found ads.
He seemed to have trouble eating and was not able to eat anything like a raw bone a few weeks ago. Last night he was able to chew on a raw bone for the first time and did a pretty good job. Possibly his lack of nutrition which caused his weight loss affected histeeth/gums. Tonight I gave the tendons for the dogs to chew on and he had a tougher time than the others but was finally able to manipulate it (I watched carefully so he did not break of big pieces).
A rescue that I did two years ago was a dog that was similar, literally starved, but I never had a hard time getting him to eat (he was only three years old and an owner turn in, which is younger than this guy). I literally had to use a catch pole for about three months to get him into his crate so that I could feed him (he has huge food issues and attacked my Beardie over a HeartGuard). I still feed him in his giant crate but he knows to go in means he will be fed.

Hi Lisa..That is a brilliant idea..we are in the middle of our black fly
season.
it only last about a month but I wonder if the Polar Curtain would keep
those little buggers out of the house, they seem to find me no matter where
I hide..

Sometimes, Pyrs just are thin... especially adult males. It helps to neuter
them, but I have battled my adult males for years to keep them at a decent
show weight when they would seem to prefer to be much thinner! I think that it
depends some on specific bloodlines, at least that has been my experience.
I also have spent $$$ at vet to learn that my dog is healthy, and I should
just feed him more! lol.
All in all, it is a better situation to have a dog on the thinner side than
on the heavier side, so don't sweat it too much. Everyone has their anecdotal
cures for dogs that won't eat, maybe one of them will work for you!

Our 8 year old girl Sierra has always been rail-thin, at about 75
pounds. She has access to food all the time, but has always been a
grazer. She also gets various treats quite often, and in spite of
sleeping 20 hours a day she has never had a weight problem. Tom.

It is good to hear the feedback on the weight issues with Pyrs. Czar is now
3 1/2 and I was very concerned about his weight hovering around 108-110
pounds. He is a "nibbler" of his food, and I make sure I feed them only
healthy treats on a regular basis and no table food. However, I took him to
the vet for his 3000 mile check up last Saturday and he is now 128#! The
vet said he looks great and he may gain a few more pounds by the time he is
4, but his weight of 128 is still good. Even though I still think he looks
skinny....

Also the history of the lines Terence! HA, my Czar is 5 now, 29.5 inches
tall and weighs 106! A long lean lanky boy, his lines usually mature at
age 5........I'm waiting ;o

Hi Judith:

Thank you for your response. Your Czar is about the same size as Jasper. I was beginning to think that I had one of the smallest male Pyrs in existence." LOL"
