Hi Everyone,
I would like to thank all of you who replied to
me. It really meant alot to us.
Chloe had another seizure at 6:15 pm last night.
Bringing the total for the 24 hrs. to 4 (if not 5 for the one we think
she
may have had while we were out). I called the
Vet's office immediately again to let them know the Vet had
not called us back. We really do have a wonderful
Vet office. There are 8 Vets there and we see just the
one. They are extremely busy, we know, but we
were so worried about what to do next with her. They told
me they would pull him from a room and call me
back and they did very quickly.
He suggested she go on Phenobarbital (64.8mg) 1
pill every 12 hours. My husband went there to pick that up
and she had her first dose at 7:30 pm last night.
They told us it would take 3 to 4 days to get her system
acclimated to the drug and that she would appear
zombie-like and to not be upset. They said many owners
are disturbed by the effects on the dog but that
she would get used to the drug and not act so sedated soon.
She did seem glassy-eyed and woozy about a half
hour to an hour after taking her first dose. We were glad she
was able to relax but we were also on guard with
her, worrying every second that she would seize again. Since
it had been happening every 6 hours or so... we
found ourselves counting... hey it's been 7, hey it's been 8! and
so on. She has not had another seizure yet since
taking the drug but we no better than to "trust" it so soon.
They told us they really do not believe it's
the Sentinel that caused the seizures. That it's very rare. But that
does
not assure me because VERY rare and NOT at all
are too different things. It has obviously happened to dogs and
what's
to say that OUR dog isn't one of the rare ones,
you know? So we aren't giving it to her. We will put her back on
Advantage
and Interceptor. (Our dogs have had bouts of
passing whip worms back and forth so we wanted a medication that
would
cover that). The only weird thing about the
Advantage is that she would get this odor to her skin for days after we used
that stuff. It didnt happen to our other
dogs, just Chloe. Was very odd. So we wanted to switch them all to just the
one
pill thing and that is where the Sentinel came
into play in August. We really don't know if Sentinel has caused this. I
don't
believe it has because we do think it was a
seizure she had back in May when we came home to the disaster mess all
over.
She was not on Sentinel at the time. I
honestly have a problem with putting any kind of poisons in my dogs. It's very
hard
for me to do that. Of course the Vets always
tell you that you are doing your dog a disservice if you don't treat them
for
heartworm or fleas. But it's
poison. And it bothers me. Chloe has always been more delicate and has a
weaker stomach
and things like that. So we are not giving her
that Sentinel. Right now I'm not going to give her anything but her
Phenobarbital
for her seizures. She has to go to the Vet
in 2 weeks to have her serum levels measured to see if it's the appropriate
amount
of drug in her system.
Almost 24 hours Seizure free!
