Re: [pyrnet] Cuddly Pyrs

Wow, this is great stuff!  I got Bacchus as a 12-week old after having a family of four Labs for over 20 years.  As you can imagine, it was a steep learning curve for me!  And it took me months to learn not to take it personally that he didn't eat his food, didn't want to be cuddled up next to me, preferred to be outside ... and yet, when I went to a Pyr event (he was 10 months at the time) several knowledgeable folks in the breed commented on how "attached" he is to me!

Now Bacchus has learned to get up on the bed with me, usually in the morning, and he will allow me to pet his head and scratch his belly as he lies upon his back ... and that's about as much lovin' as he can take.

No kisses from him either - except for little children and disabled people!  Last year I took him to an indoor winter farmer's market for socialization, so when it started up again this year I took him back.  He walked nicely by my side through the crowd but with his head down below his shoulders, unless he was approached by children and then he perked right up.  Then a 30-something man in a wheelchair saw him and motored right up to him - and Bacchus went right up on his lap with his front paws, put his face in the guy's face and the guy planted a big kiss on Bacchus'  very wet nose!!!  Yuck!  But Bacchus' tail was wagging away!

Also, there seem to be certain women that Bacchus just adores and has to jump up on.  His original "mom," one certain vet and a couple of young women at the farmer's market.  I don't know what it is about them that "turns him on"!!!

Thanks for all the fun stories!  This list has definitely helped me learn about, deal with, understand and, most importantly, enjoy this breed.

My pyr Mellow is cuddly and will allow me to pet and hug and lie on him while I worship him for as long ad I can stand it. And that goes for anyone else who wants to also.  He is a therapy dog and when we go to a center or nursing home he gets loving for an hour or more and loves every minute of it.  When people pass by him he gets pretty insulted.  As for walking in front, that's strictly a dominance thing for pyrs. They like to think THEY are alpha, imo, so I don't let mine get away with it, although its not easy.  I don't think the cuddly thing came naturally to him.  He had to learn it was a good thing, like everything else. As a pup he couldn't stand to be held or fussed over.

Hi,

Does anyone have Pyrs that are cuddly?  My Cody only wants be pet if I'm scratching the right spot.  He'll tolerate a hug very briefly and has never given kisses.  Are most Pyrs like this and it is just part of their aloofness?  If I try to walk with him outside, he stays a good pace in front of me and speeds up if I catch up to him.  He is happiest sitting on the hill or in the middle of the grape vines and watching everyone else's property for them.  He is really a house dog, but spends alot of time outdoors while we are home.  But, not in the summer.  Then he prefers the central air vent on the kitchen floor!
