Re: [pyrnet] Cuddly Pyrs

We have a 15 month old female pyr who thinks she is a cocker spaniel (our older dog).  She rolls over for belly rubs all the time.  It is so funny to see this 115lb dog roll over like a puppy.  She is such a lover too.  If you are at the computer she will rest her muzzle on your arm and look at you with that 'aren't I so cute?' look.    If she wont come in, all we have to do is start loving the other dog.  She is in the house in a instant.  Cant miss a bit of loving!

This one loves ears.  She likes to wake everyone up by kissing on the ears.  She sniffs and licks until you get up.

She is also starting to grow into her guard duties.  For two nights she was going crazy at 2am- it was too quiet for coyotes.  My husband finally went outside with her and found there was a herd of deer.  She was circling the property and wouldn't calm down until she was sure they were gone.  It wore her out so much she slept the entire next day.  We told her she was a good girl!

My one concern is that she will be over confident with the coyotes.  Right now she listens and comes in when she hears them but I do worry.

I love to hear about the difference in all your dear pyrs!

Glad I started this conversation!  What neat stories about this breed.  Don't get me wrong, I love my Pyr and am used to his independance.  Although sometimes I threaten to get another dog that will actually want to stay with me in the house!  As if that would go over well with him.  Cody could also care less about food.  It is a struggle to keep weight on him.  Not being interested in food made puppy school difficult as he wasn't food motivated for the commands and the trainers did not fully understand the breed, so we or I usually go into trouble for not training him well enough!  No matter, even with his lack of affection, he is a perfect Pyr and I love him to death.  He never does anything wrong.

Cody used to sleep in my bed, but I got a new mattress that makes the bed quite a bit higher.  He tried to get up one time and got hung up with his front paws and belly on the bed and his back legs hanging off.  I had to boost up his back end.  This was the last of sleeping with me.  Although, not necessarily a bad thing since I would often wake up with him on his back and his hind feet in my face!

Gotta love these guys!

Ha Ha - you guys should be glad for non-kissing Pyrs (mine don't give kisses either) - but my old border collie is nuts with kisses - if my Pyrs were like that, I'd be soaked all the time (the remains of a drink of water is bad enough - Orso doesn't like water, he scoops it up!)  He also LOVEs to be combed!  And he must let me kiss him on the nose before he gets to go to his food bowl at night - he doesn't seem to mind that at all!

Mine is pretty cuddly. He loves to be massaged, but he barely ever gives kisses. Whenever I try to kiss him on his face, he turns away. He doesn't like me trying to lay on him either. He does enjoy being petted and massaged though.

Hi,

Does anyone have Pyrs that are cuddly?  My Cody only wants be pet if I'm scratching the right spot.  He'll tolerate a hug very briefly and has never given kisses.  Are most Pyrs like this and it is just part of their aloofness?  If I try to walk with him outside, he stays a good pace in front of me and speeds up if I catch up to him.  He is happiest sitting on the hill or in the middle of the grape vines and watching everyone else's property for them.  He is really a house dog, but spends alot of time outdoors while we are home.  But, not in the summer.  Then he prefers the central air vent on the kitchen floor!
