RE: [pyrnet] Glucosamine/Chondroitin

Title: Message
I feed my Pyrs and Newf Nutro Dog Food with glucosimine/chondroitin.  I also use the supplement that my vet prescribed which is Dasuquin for my Newf who has elbow dysplasia and just had (2) TPLO surgeries on his knees for CCL tears.  I can't say that I have noticed a tremendous difference with or without.  I tried it also on my youngest Pyr, as she has a CCL tear also and is scheduled for surgery after Christmas.  I always administer it with their food, as it can cause stomach upset which it did in my Pyr; I discontinued it's use as her tummy is very sensitive.  It takes a while to see any type of results on the Dasuquin; 1 month of daily double dose and maintenance dose daily after that.

I find more definitive results in using a NSAID like Previcox; this to me, when used on an as need basis, works miracles for arthritis and other ortho related issues.  You may want to talk with your vet about this option.  Always remember to give with food...I have found this to be the most successful with my previous Malamutes, Pyrs and my Newf.

Subject: [pyrnet] Glucosamine/Chondroitin

Josie is 11 and we've had her since she was a puppy.  She has never, ever cried out in pain or ever shown that she was in distress from pain. She has survived the indignations and discomforts of our 10 grandchildren's physical, yet loving play with a quiet dignity that must be the inbred into the pyr's temperment.

Lately she has developed a slight limp in her front legs.  I assume that she is in some kind of pain, but she doesn't express it. Our vet suggests that she may have arthritis.  It's been suggested by friends that we start giving her glucosimine chondoitin.  Has anyone had any experience with this treatment?
