Hi Trudy,
We've never had a skin problem like that here with ours
although Tucker did have one tiny little red dot on his skin when
he
was shaved for hip replacement surgery (he was only a
year old!)... so they refused to do the surgery and he had to be put
on
antibiotics for an entire month. If they had cut him
near that lil dot I guess, infection could set in and could make his hip
implant
fail so they don't risk it since it's a very costly
($5000) surgery. Antibiotics did the trick and we didn't need to put any creams
on
him. I agree with the Gold Bond Powder or perhaps some
Neosporin would help.
As for collars, Tuck weighs 170 pounds. His papers
(which we never bothered to actually get cause we didn't care)
supposedly
say he's a Great Pyrenees but he looks more like a
Pyrenean Mastiff to us. We don't like collars for our dogs really and we
use
harnesses. For him we had to get special about it cause
of his size and we got one like this:
Works like a charm!

I have found the problem area - it is red and sore and stinky! So my beautifully coated pup is now shaved under his throat and down his neck - sigh! My real problem is what to put on him as a collar - I would love to leave his collar off - but he 'frequently' goes for great adventures. He has been wearing an 1 wide bright green collar with his name and phone number plus a tag with home and cell numbers. What types of collars do others use? Has anyone else had this stinky problem - anyone use anything topical for it - I"m hoping that getting air to it will solve the problem and maybe some athlete foot cream if it turns out to be a fungus. Living in the country and having lots of critters, I have to try to figure this out before running to the vet. It's going to be warm and beautiful here today - hope everyone is having a great summer!
