A few quick stories to help anyone thinking about this along their way:

1) Enrico Fermi (I think) was taking bets on whether the Trinity test went
off without a hitch, blew a hole in the atmosphere immediately above the
bomb, blew the atmosphere off a) New Mexico (The Army had evacuation plans
in place for the Manhattan Project people in case something like this
happened) or b) the entire globe, and finally, if the bomb set off a chain
reaction in the atmosphere that caused a worldwide firestorm.

2) Oppenheimer, immediately following Trinity, turned to an associate and
quoted the Bahavda Gita: "I have become Shiva, Destroyer of Worlds."
Imagine the entry of the Indian Goddess, in her Destroyer Aspect, making an
entrance at that point....
