Actually, there are some interesting things to watch on TV too: one that jumps to mind immediately is "Black Sheep Squadron," (takes place in the Pacific theater) which you can usually catch on the History Channel. There was an old show called "Combat" starring Vic Morrow - you might search for that.
Also "Memphis Belle", for a look at some of the air war.
Plenty good books, also. I'd recommend reading Stephen Ambrose's books "D-Day" and "Citizen Soldier" for a fascinating, "soldier's-eye" view of both D-Day and the campaigns following it.
