Man I use to love Black Sheep Squadron. It was way more seriose then
McCales Navy or Hogans Heros, but is still was lighter then most war movies.
MY absolutely favorite(all though campy part) was the fact that all the
air battle scenes were just stock footage from the actuall war. The only
problem with that was I think they had maybe 20 minutes of stock footage
because it almost always looked like the same scene when they shot someone
down.

On a darker note. Another great movie to watch to see the effect of war on
civilians is Grave of Fireflies. Its anime(aka Japanese Cartoon) but its
not you normal run of the mill big breasted, big guns, no plot anime. Its a
gripping story about a brother and sister trying to survive on the streets
of a japanese city(I dont rember if it was Tokyo or not) near the end of the
war. Their Mother is dead and their father is in the military. and they
have to not only find food and shelter but survive in a city being bombed by
the U.S. This is a really good movie and one I like to show to
intellectuals who think anime is just for kids, perverts and Guys who like
to see stuff blow up.
