As an alternate, reinvent "Christine" for your PCs.
Their old tank is retired when an updated model comes
on line. Except the old tank isn't about to let go of
the crew it considers to be its own.

If you keep the old tank in the unit you can
orchestrate events where unexplained accidents keep
happening to the new crew assigned to the old tank.
Suspicious breakdowns where nothing wrong can be
found. 

Hell hath no fury like an armoured vehicle scorned...
