That might be much more true for the western front. In Northern Africa
because of supply shortages both sides grabbed whatever they could.
Rommel itself drove around in a british command vehicle and both sides
used tanks and vehicles from the other side.

The British vehicle park for supplies consisted largely of italian
trucks.

And the maintenance, well, back then those vehicles tended to be a lot
simpler than today. And crafty mechanics could actually make things...

btw, I believe booby traps were much more eminent in e.g the vietnam
war. What I have read this was not in the state of mind of people
(blow up things, yes, but booby traps? Could hit your own
civilians...)
