Even if the news stated 'aliens,' people would be skeptical.  A few
would run around fanatically, and it could be easily written off.  As
much as people want to believe in other life out there, they'd mark
believers as insane.  Especially easy if its contained in one area, like
England.  The masses tend to prefer being cattle, and sticking to their
every day regimen, even though they dream.  

People believe what they want to believe, and they hear what they want
to hear.  No matter the truth.
