[WW] Scouts vs Rangers

Hi all,

i have some questions for you history buffs: Did scouting units exist?
Rangers are specifically mentioned in the Commando prestige class, but
the scout description sounds like Rangers to me.  What's the difference? 
If individual scouting units did exist (as opposed to motorized infantry
volunteers just out looking for Germans), where did they serve and what
did they do?

The reason i ask is that i'll be WMing a scout soon and i'm getting
together ideas for adventures.
