Sorry, I don't remember the German general, though I
know of a similar situation in the ACW (for any
Deadlands fans).  

After Fort Donelson surrendered to Grant, he is
supposed to have said of General Gideon Pillow, "If
I'd of caught him, I'd of let him go.  He will do us
more good commanding you fellows."
